New Agents: How the Contracting & Appointment Process at New Horizons Works

If you’re looking to get contracted and appointed with New Horizons, you might be curious about how the process works.

We’d like to give a brief overview so you feel more comfortable about working with our team.

Step 1: Speak to One of Our Specialists

When most agents come to us for contracting, they already know which companies they’re interested in. And that’s why we like to have a short phone call with you.

Nine times out of 10, you’ll end up contracting with different companies, because they’re actually more competitive in your state. Not only do we consider the actual rates, but underwriting niches can be helpful as well.

We know which carriers are the go-tos in most states for certain situations, so a short phone with us will help you get that competitive edge in the market.

Step 2: Receive the Contracts

Once we’ve determined which products and companies you’re interested in, Ginny Dunker, our Contracting Specialist, will send you the contracts.

Your other option is to request your own contracts using our online system, SureLC. If you use this online system, we’ll still reach out to you to make sure you’re on the right track.

Step 3: Send a Voided Check & Training Documents

If you’d like to get contracted with a life insurance company, you need to send over your E&O insurance as well as AML training documents. If you’re not sure how to obtain these, contact Ginny.

A voided check is also needed to get you started.

Once we receive everything, Ginny will double check that everything is filled out correctly, and she’ll submit it to the companies.

Step 4: Run a Credit Report via Vector One®

Many insurance companies use Vector One®, which is basically a credit report for insurance agents. It shows if you owe any money to an insurance company. Sometimes, you’ll need to explain why that’s the case.

They also check for any felonies or bankruptcy. In those situations, you have to send in a letter explaining what happened. Not all companies do this, but most will to make sure you’re in good standings.

On the contract itself, it will also usually list basic questions about bankruptcy and felonies.

Step 5: Wait for the Contracting to Go Through

How long it takes just varies by company.

Many companies allow Just-in-Time appointments where you can get contracted as you do business.

However, there are some companies who require you to get contracted before you start writing.

Step 6: Receive Your Welcome Kit

When you get contracted, most companies will send you a welcome kit. It usually includes all the forms you need such as applications and brochures. It will also tell you how to get set up on the online agent portal. (Here is a list of every agent portal for future reference.)

Other companies send an email with this information, and they may require you to log in and order your own supplies. If you’d rather not order your own supplies, we are happy to do that for you.
